Local History Books Available!

The Story of Kentwood describes the dramatic struggles and sacrifices of the earliest settlers of Paris Township, the changes that marked the Township’s coming of age near the turn of the century, and the rapid transformation of an agricultural area into a thriving suburban community. The authors weave stories told by longtime residents with historical facts and text to create a book that is an interesting as well as an informative source.

Copies of The Story of Kentwood can be purchased at any of the following locations for $25.00 plus tax:

  • City Offices, 4900 Breton Avenue
  • Kentwood Library, 4700 Kalamazoo Ave.
  • Barnes and Noble, 3670 28th St.
  • Schuler Books & Music, 2660 28th St.

Researching Local Records
The KHPC is in the process of developing a searchable database for local history items in the Kentwood library.  The database and computer access are planned for the new library, scheduled for completion in 2010.

Don't Throw It Out!
When was the last time you cleaned your attic or basement? What did you do with all of the old pictures and other memorabilia?

Whatever you do don’t throw it out and don’t leave it tucked away so that no one else can see it! You are the community and your history is worth sharing to others! Consider adding it to the Kentwood Library for preservation and use within the Local History Room.

How Can You Get Involved?
If you are interested in learning more about the Historic Preservation Commission attend one of their regular scheduled meetings or give staff a call at (616) 554 – 0707.

Regular Meeting Schedule
Unless otherwise noticed, the KHPC meets on the second Monday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in the Heritage Room at the Kentwood Library, 4700 Kalamazoo Avenue, SE -- unless otherwise posted.
